Student Exit Survey
Dr. Lauren Tacke-Cushing, AVP for Academic Affairs with Dr. Patty Munsch, Vice President for Student Affairs and Kaliah Greene, Interim Vice President for the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness along with the staff from the three offices will participate in the development and implementation of the survey.
Currently, SCCC does not have a mechanism for collecting data from our graduates prior to graduation including their personal email address, where they are planning to transfer or if they are planning to enter the workforce. Additionally, we do not have any feedback on their experiences at SCCC or on their academic program. Student feedback is critical when reviewing the efficacy of academic programs and is currently not available. Giving priority to student feedback at the time of graduation will be helpful to Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness and Alumni Relations, as well as other members of SCCC leadership.
With the development of a short online survey (6-8 questions) the college will have a mechanism to better track gainful employment, transfer institutions, general student satisfaction, and obtain current contact information. This provides an opportunity to utilize the data when conducting program reviews, contacting alumni, and employers. The use of survey prizes has been shown to provide incentive in completing surveys and increasing the overall survey response rate. Students who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing for gift cards of various amounts. The gift cards will be used in the marketing of the survey as an incentive to increase the response rate. The gift cards will be distributed to students during Graduation Rehearsal on May 2, 2023.
A Fabric Repaired Helps the Earth to be Spared
The two faculty members involved in this project will be (Associate) Professor Pamela Lynch (Biology Department) & (Adjunct Assistant Professor, Library/Visual Arts) Professor Sheila D. Fox. Prior to working for SCCC, Pamela worked as a “Fisheries Specialist” and then a “Marine Resources Specialist” in the Marine Habitat Protection/Tidal Wetlands Unit for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Sheila D. Fox, brainchild of the proposed idea for this grant request, serves as both Librarian and Professional Studio Artist. At SCCC, where she has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor for 18 years, metaphorically wears a few hats --- one as Reference and Reader Services Librarian, one as an intermittent Art Professor in the Visual Arts Dept. and one as a creator and facilitator of pop-up “Art Makerspace Events” in the library (2013-2019).
Initial presentation/discussion with students on the impact of textile and fashion production on the environment and how this recent trend in “Visible Mending” can be useful in protecting the environment. Followed up by a continued open discussion of fashion trends (& associated environmental impacts) while students gather (likely during common hour) to work on & complete their projects.
Goal: To reduce/slow production of textiles by repairing those items we have to make them last longer AND at the same time use this process to be artistically expressive and create a potentially “new clothing style” to communicate ideas about the future of the Earth.
All interested SCCC students will be invited to participate but focus will be initially geared toward those students in the Marine Sciences (MAR) courses offered through the Biology Department (i.e. MAR 111, Marine Biology; MAR 105, Oceanography (including the Honors Section); MAR 121, Marine Habitat Ecology & ENV 295, Environmental Sustainability). Marine Sciences Club members will also be invited to attend as well as other students, such as the Art Club, that demonstrate an interest in the subject matter.
The workshop/laboratory exercise will be in the Lindsey Life Sciences Building laboratory room(s) and flex spaces throughout the building, as needed. Display areas (once project is completed) will be throughout Campus and selected from the Lindsey Life Sciences Building, the display case in the Smithtown Sciences Building, The Huntington Library and (potentially) within the Visual Arts Department “gallery” (Southampton Building). The “display” may even become a “travelling” exhibit and/or part of an “Earth Day” or “STEM” day on Campus, if applicable
