Left to right standing are Suffolk retirees: Wayne Pevey, Jackie Schillig, Craig Harris, Doris Stratman, Howard Stevens. Seated: Harriette Novick, SCC Alunmni Gloria Dalton and James DeVita, and Richard Johnson.
Richard Johnson and Wayne Pevey hosted a theatre party this past February in Sarasota, Florida where they are currently living. They invited SCC retirees and a few of their local friends to a performance and celebration in honor of James DeVita. James was starring in "Murder on the Orient Express" at Sarasota's Asol Repertory Theatre.
James DeVita (seated at center of photo) started his acting career as one of Richard
and Harriette's students in the SCC Theatre Program. That was the beginning of a
successful acting career. He and his wife, Brenda, have been associated with the classical repertory company, The American Players Theatre, in Spring Green, Wisconsin for over 25 years. He was lauded by The Wall Street Journal theatre critic, Terry Teachout, as "the best classical actor in the country." He has also published four novels, a number of plays (some staged by the SCC Theatre) as well as scripts for young people. He is a true credit to Suffolk Community College.
This is what I do in retirement and during this pandemic.
I am learning to digitally draw using my Apple Pencil and the iPad app “Procreate.”
Diane and I are waiting for the spring thaw to start our annual gardening adventure. Diane is into medicinal herbs and I am into vegetable gardening.
We are for the second year renting out a bee hive from Hallockville Farm and Museum in Riverhead. Last year we mostly observed the process and were able to get 10 jars of fresh organic honey. This year it will be more hands on and we will have more responsibility in taking care of the hive. Right now we are taking a course with Chris Kelly--master bee keeper--to learn how to take care of our hive. It is fun and the payoff will be great.

I'm in the early stages of building a model of the galleon San Francisco II, one of the most feared ships of the 16th century. I started this project in January 2021 and expect it will take over a year to complete. Above are a few pictures of what it looks like during these very early stages of this project. The first challenge was learning how to bend miniature wood planks into the contour of the ship's curvature.
During the year I bake Irish soda Bread from a recipe given to me by my mother and mother-in law. My mother came from Donegal and my mother-in-law came from Derry. Of course, I bake several soda breads during March. Tap the button below to obtain the recipe I use.
